Simplicity 8640: a favorite!

If you have been following my blog for awhile, you'll know that sewing dresses
is one of my favorite things! I've had Simplicity 8640 on my radar for some time, and
when pulling fabric to "sew down some stash", I found this striped linen blend. I do
not have any notes on when or where I purchased it, so it has to be a l.o.n.g. time ago!

Simplicity's description for this pattern is as follows:
Float in comfort with this Misses'/Women's loose fitting dress or tunic by designer Elaine Heigl. Features handkerchief design with length variations. Also: "not suitable for stripes"

   I beg to disagree!

I like Views A and C, and chose View A's longer length. LOVE that handkerchief hem!

POCKETS!
I admit to not following the pattern for pocket placement, as I had read other reviews stating that the
pattern placement was low. I just tried it on, and sewed the pockets on last, trying my best to
somewhat match the stripes.

Placing the bodice pattern pieces on the bias allowed for this cool chevron. I think this is
a design feature that should be celebrated with this pattern! Focusing on matching the bodice
stripes at the center seam did not allow for matching when attaching the skirt, but that doesn't
bother me in the least.

The pattern also calls for facing the neckline and armholes.....nope. Purchased bias tape
binding worked perfectly :-)

I sewed this pattern straight out of the envelope without any alterations. It is roomy dress, and I'm
considering going down a size next time I make it.
Saying that, though, I love this dress as it is! It's become one of my favorites this summer,
and if you like the style I highly recommend it!

Still sewing for summer!

  1. I am not a big fan of facings either, and always forget I can use bias tape. I have a blouse I am working on now that I could have used that tip for. Overall, your version of this pattern hits it out of the park!!!

    1. I hear you, Vanessa! I'm trying to remember that I can go "off pattern" and make the changes that I think might work better. :-) Thanks for the kind words.

  2. I love how you used the stripe fabric for the dress. It looks so pretty, but also cool and comfortable. Perfect for summer.
