Garment Sewing: My 2020 Winter Module
Trying something new in 2020, I've decided to participate in
The Great Module Sew Along Challenge, which runs from Jan 28 - March 24,
hosted by Whitney at TomKat Stitchery.
I am calling this my Winter Module, as it is very much WINTER here in the Midwest, and will
continue to be well into March/April.
I've been intrigued by the capsule/module wardrobe idea for awhile now, but have never dipped
my toes in. I'm a one-garment-at-a-time sewist, so this is a bit outside of my comfort zone.
Garment sewing is the one area of my creative life where I don't have WIPs (works in progress)
stashed away. When I want to sew a garment, I pick a pattern & fabric, and sew it up.
With module sewing, there is more advanced planning, and I'm giving it a try!
This Module Sew Along Challenge includes 6 garments that
will be able to coordinate together for many options to combine into different outfits:
2 bottoms: pants or skirt
3 tops
1 topper: jacket, cardigan, etc
And as dresses are my favorite thing to sew, I'm also adding 1 dress to the list.
I tend to purchase fabrics with intention, so I had no problem pulling fabrics
from my stash that coordinate with each other:
Top to Bottom:
Grey/white jersey knit
Grey jersey knit
White stable textured ponte
Grey rayon challis
Cheetah print knit
Mustard textured woven
Mustard & black floral jacquard knit
Black poly/rayon/lycra stretch suiting
And since this is a 2 month Challenge, I decided to mostly choose patterns that I have made before.
I didn't want to have to spend extra time on fitting. Plus, I like them!
Below is a sampling of some of the patterns I have pulled, but I haven't boxed myself in by matching
them to fabric yet. I know my choices will need to be a little flexible to keep my interest piqued.
Although there is a suggested order of sewing the listed garments, I've already deviated from
that order as I have cut out and started sewing the Tania Culottes by Megan Nielsen,
in order to submit them to the monthly Sew My Style 2020 Challenge.
I am using the grey rayon challis, and so far, so good!
This year I was looking for a more organized, planned approach to my garment sewing.
And it is my hope that committing to these challenges will carry me along.
But I'm not feeling any pressure to produce: sewing is one of my most enjoyable
creative outlets!
These are wonderful plans! I am joining in also! I mostly decided it makes sense since I am working on wardrobe pieces anyway, and it will be awesome to see what others are doing on IG. I am excited to see how your sewing goes!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Vanessa! I'll be watching to see what your plans are :-)
